The Institutional Governance of Political Parties in Bangladesh

Published: 01 November 2026

Internal governance and integrity within political parties are essential to democratic governance. In this context, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has reviewed the legal framework governing political parties in Bangladesh, along with practices of transparency and accountability in their internal democracy, organisational activities, and financing.

The study examines institutional governance within Bangladesh’s political parties from 2008 to December 2025, incorporating updated information up to August 2026 where applicable. It analyses the legal framework governing political parties and compliance with relevant laws, internal democratic practices, financial transparency and accountability, and the nature and causes of irregularities and corruption, and puts forward recommendations based on the findings.

Key recommendations include strengthening the Election Commission’s authority and transparency in political party registration and oversight; ensuring disclosure and auditing of income and expenditure at all levels; holding regular party councils and electing leadership through secret ballots; and increasing the participation of women and marginalised groups in party leadership and candidate nominations. The study also calls for the adoption of codes of conduct and integrity policies, measures to prevent individuals involved in criminal activities from joining political parties, and effective action against party leaders and members implicated in criminal offences.

TIB expects that the study’s findings and recommendations will contribute to strengthening governance within political parties and raising awareness among relevant stakeholders.
