Political Commitment to Democracy, Good Governance and Integrity: TIB’s Recommendations

Published: 30 November 2023

Political parties are among the non-state institutions included in the National Integrity Strategy (NIS). In a democratic system of governance, citizens elect their representatives through political parties, thereby organizing their demands and establishing a relationship or communication with the state. Political parties publish their constitutions, declarations, and manifestos to present their commitments and action plans for upholding good governance and democracy. The commitment of political parties and its effective implementation not only contribute to socio-economic development and the institutionalization of democracy but also serve as catalysts in strengthening accountability to the people and participatory governance frameworks. Although the practice of good governance and integrity is crucial in a democratic system for sustaining socio-economic and political development, public expectations regarding ensuring free and fair elections, the rule of law, and a transparent, accountable, participatory, and corruption-free governance process have not been fulfilled.

Although political commitments in Bangladesh have yet to achieve full practical significance, the role of political parties in strengthening accountable democratic structures and establishing and ensuring good governance is undeniable. As part of its ongoing research and advocacy efforts on national integrity institutions, effective parliamentary establishment, and free and fair elections, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has formulated this set of recommendations to promote the inclusion and effective implementation of issues related to the practice of good governance, integrity, and anti-corruption in political party commitments/constitutions to create an enabling environment for preventing corruption.
