There is no authentic data available regarding the e-waste produced and recycled in Bangladesh. According to a study by the Department of Environment conducted through BUET (2017), approximately 3% of the estimated total e-waste produced in Bangladesh (13.3 million kg/year) is recycled and exported, while 97 percent of e-waste collection is carried out by the informal sector at the consumer level. TIB recently completed a research study titled "E-waste Management in Bangladesh: Governance Challenges and Way Forward." It has been observed that although environmental pollution and health risks resulting from unplanned e-waste management have been covered in many studies, there has been little research on its relationship with climate change. This study is a continuation of TIB's previous research on climate and environmental issues, including medical waste management.
This research identifies the challenges within the regulatory framework of e-waste management. It highlights the compliance status of relevant stakeholders according to applicable legal obligations and emphasizes the relevance of the informal sector in e-waste management. Furthermore, it explores recommendations and ways to overcome existing challenges related to environment and climate change.
