Press Release
Dhaka, 14 September 2024: The Inter-University Anti-Corruption Debate Competition 2024, organised by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), concluded with a pledge for a youth-led, logic-driven establishment of an anti-corruption state system and a discrimination-free "New Bangladesh." Jagannath University Debating Society (JNUDS) emerged as the champion in the competition. In the final, held on Saturday at the CCDB HOPE Centre in Savar, Dhaka University Debating Society was the runner-up. The award for the best debater of the tournament went to Main Al Mubasshir of the champion team, while Ragib Anjum from Dhaka University was named the best debater of the final.
At the closing ceremony, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman presented the awards to the winners. Also present was Mohammad Tauhidul Islam, Director of TIB's Outreach and Communication division.
TIB's Executive Director, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, said, "For the past two decades, debaters have been with us as one of the most crucial forces of the anti-corruption social movement. They are our comrades-in-arms in the fight against corruption. The young debaters are now even more relevant in building the 'New Bangladesh' dreamed of by those whose lives and blood brought success to the anti-discrimination movement. We believe they will continue their intellectual practice and the battle of logic to fulfil the dream of a discrimination-free, democratic, well-governed, and corruption-free Bangladesh."
Thanking the 96 participating debaters and the judges for the successful execution of the three-day residential debate competition, Mohammad Tauhidul Islam said, "We believe that the youth are the main driving force in preventing any form of discrimination and corruption. In 2024, they have proven that our belief is not misplaced. We hope that a logic-based, tolerant society will be built by these young debaters in the days to come."
TIB organised the residential debate competition from 12-14 September 2024, featuring 32 teams from across the country, centred on the theme of "State Reform and Corruption." A total of 87 debates were held on various topics. The champion team was awarded BDT 50,000, and the runner-up team received BDT 30,000. The top eight teams from this year's event will gain direct entry into the next year's competition.
