Political Commitment to Democracy, Good Governance and Integrity: TIB’s Recommendations

Published: 30 November 2023

Political parties are one of the key non-state institutions included in the National Integrity Strategy. In a democratic system of governance, citizens establish a relationship and communication with the state by organizing their demands through the election of public representatives via political parties. To uphold good governance and democracy, political parties publish constitutions, manifestos, and declarations to present their commitments and action plans to the public. The commitments of political parties and their effective implementation serve a dual purpose: they facilitate socio-economic development and the institutionalization of democracy, while also acting as a catalyst for strengthening accountability to the people and a participatory governance structure. Although practicing good governance and integrity is crucial for sustaining socio-economic and political development, public expectations regarding free and fair elections, the rule of law, and a transparent, accountable, participatory, and corruption-free governance process remain unfulfilled.

While the practical significance or impact of political party commitments has not yet been fully realized in Bangladesh, the role of political parties is undeniable in strengthening an accountable democratic framework and ensuring effective good governance. As part of Transparency International Bangladesh’s (TIB) ongoing research and advocacy efforts regarding National Integrity Institutions, the establishment of an effective parliament, and free and fair elections, these recommendations have been formulated. Their objective is to create a conducive environment for preventing corruption by encouraging the inclusion of good governance, integrity practices, and anti-corruption measures in the commitments and constitutions of political parties, along with ensuring their effective implementation.
