International Right to Information Day 2025

An independent Information Commission must be formed immediately

Published: 23 September 2025

Concept Note

Information is considered the oxygen of democracy. Universal access to information constitutes the cognitive and procedural foundation of a democratic and inclusive state. It is an integral component of citizens' ownership of the state and is intrinsically linked to freedom of expression and media freedom. At the same time, the empowerment of the people and the concept of government accountability to the citizens remain meaningless without the free flow of information. Above all, the free flow of and access to information are recognized as fundamental prerequisites for ensuring democracy, justice, human rights, transparency, accountability, the rule of law, and overall good governance.

A primary objective of observing the day this year is to empower the public and stakeholders with accurate information and data so they can participate effectively and play a proactive role in accelerating good governance and sustainable development to mitigate the impacts of environmental and climate change. In the context of Bangladesh, while expressing solidarity with this theme, TIB strongly condemns the government’s failure to reconstitute the Information Commission for over a year and demands its immediate formation.
