International Clean Energy Day 2025

Clean Energy: Sustainable Future

Published: 23 January 2025

Concept Note

Introduction

Clean energy is globally recognised as an essential, timely, and reliable energy source for combating climate change and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The term clean energy refers to sources that have a minimal impact on the environment and human health by emitting little to no greenhouse gases during their generation or use.

As a form of clean energy, renewable energy has emerged as a beacon of hope, serving as a key catalyst in the transition towards a sustainable future. Energy derived from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power plays a crucial role in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating the impacts of global warming. To raise awareness about increasing the generation and use of clean energy, and by extension, renewable energy, the United Nations General Assembly declared January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy in 2023 (Resolution A/77/327), aligning with the founding anniversary of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The day was observed for the first time in 2024.

This day serves as a pivotal moment to unite the global community in the campaign for a sustainable and renewable energy transition. The theme for this year's observance has been set as “Clean Energy for a Brighter Future”. Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) believes that renewable energy is the key to equitable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable development. One of TIB's key priorities is to conduct multifaceted activities to raise awareness and demand for a renewable energy transition in Bangladesh, addressing issues such as policy clarity, the setting of specific targets and their implementation prospects, and various other challenges. As part of these efforts and under its "Promoting Good Governance and Integrity in the Energy Sector in Bangladesh" project, TIB is observing this day to intensify the demand for a swifter transition to renewable energy and the establishment of a well-governed, corruption-free, and sustainable energy system in Bangladesh.
