Corruption in Service Sector: National Household Survey 2023

Corruption is one of the principal obstacles on the path of development, social justice and poverty eradication. Bangladesh's corruption has become the focal point of daily discussion and concern among the general public including mass media. In various state policies and strategy papers, emphasis has been placed on establishing good governance, enforcing laws and making the governance system suitable for everyone, especially for the poor, with the objective of effectively preventing corruption.

Corruption occurs at different stages of state and socio-economic activities. Through collusion between influential people in politics, administration and the private sector, unethical benefits are taken through misuse of power at the policy-making stage, including illegal transactions of large amounts of money, which extensively exerts negative influence in macro and micro spheres. Generally, such corruption is considered as grand corruption. On the other hand, service recipients become victims of different types of corruption and irregularities whilst receiving services from various organisations. Whilst receiving any service, transactions of money exceeding the specified price of the service are considered as petty corruption, which directly or indirectly affects the daily lives of ordinary people and hinders the progress of the state's economic and social development. In the present survey, the experiences of the mass regarding such corruption have been obtained.
