Bangladesh is a country prone to flood for various reasons. Particularly its location in the basin of three major rivers - Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna and 80 percent of its flood-plain landmass has made the country more prone to flood. Due to the lack of control over the management of the trans boundary river water, the flow of water during the monsoon season increases significantly. At the same time, due to encroachment of major rivers and water-bodies and unplanned urbanization, rivers are losing their water carrying capacity. Besides, the adverse effects of climate change are also attributed to the fact for ice melting in the Himalaya and causing irregularity in rainfall pattern to amplify the natural disasters, including flood. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, during the period of 2009- 2015, floods have caused financial loss of about BDT 30.7 billion.
