MNEs
Multinational
Enterprises in Bangladesh are faced with numerous impediments
involving delay and payment of bribes, either in cash or kind,
to government officials while having to comply with government
rules and regulations. The lack of infrastructure, such as port
facilities, and inefficient power and telephone services, areperceived
as a significant impediment by MNEs.
Natural disasters,
urban air pollution and traffic congestion also stand in the way
of foreign investment in Bangladesh. According to an UNCTAD report
there has been a 50% drop in foreign direct investment in Bangladesh
between 1998 and 1999. FDI in Bangladesh dropped from $308 million
in 1998 to $150 million in 1999.
Transparency
International has conducted a study to determine the nature and
extent of governance factors that may have caused such a decline.
A report on the study will be published soon.
