Newspaper Coverage on the Workshop on
" The Impact of Structural Adjustment Policies (SAP) on Corruption


Transparency International Bangladesh organized a workshop on "The Impact of Structural Adjustment Policies (SAP) on Corruption on November 29, 2000 held in Dhaka. A number of newspaper published reports on it. Some of the coverages (brief) are as follows:


Bangladesh Observer (December 01, 2000): TIB discussion - Politicians Blamed for Corruption: A top opposition political leader on Wednesday blamed politicians for corruption that "increased rapidly at present" for nurturing it at high level of the state. " However, many think that the trend reduced now," said BNP lawmaker MK Anwar in a veiled observation at a discussion on 'The Impact of Structural Adjustment Policies (SAP) on Corruption". Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organized the talk for making an anatomy of corruption in different tiers of society and statecraft. Executive Director of TIB Manzoor Hasan presided over the meeting while Prof Muzaffer Ahmad of Dhaka University presented a paper on "Governance, Structural Adjustment and the State of Corruption in Bangladesh".

The Daily Financial Express (November 30, 2000): Thana Police Services Identified as Most Corrupt Office - MK Anwar MP, a top opposition political leader blamed politicians for corruption while he was talking at a discussion on " The Impact of Structural Adjustment Policies (SAP) on Corruption" organized by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on the 29th November, 2000 in Dhaka. Executve Director of TIB manzoor Hasan presided over the meeting while Prof Muzaffer Ahmad of Dhaka University presented a paper on "Governance, Structural Adjustment and the State of Corruption in Bangladesh". The former bureaucrat-turned-politician Mr. Anwar said, "the studies and seminars would lose ground if he cannot find out the extent of corruption within the political circles. There will be no outcome of trying to make bureaucrats honest without ensuring honesty of the politicians." TIB survey revealed that misuse of position and power was perceived as corruption by the highest proportion of respondents (76.0 %), followed by neglect of duty (75.7 %), activity outside normal procedure (67.7 %) and taking money for personal gain while on duty (57.8 %). Thana police service was pointed out for corruption by the highest number (97 %) of household (HH) respondents and the Judiciary by the second highest (89 %) numbers of HHs.

The Daily Star (November 30, 2000): Corruption at High Levels of Govt - Top Opposition Leader Blames Politicians: BNP lawmaker MK Anwar MP blamed politicians for nurturing corruption at high levels of government. He made mention of the ruling party politicians who were not present at the discussion on " The Structural Adjustment Policies (SAP) on Corruption" organized by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). " The studies should be more specific to identify the source of corruption", Anwar told the function participated by academics experts, economists and the members of civil society. Nobody would be able to stop corruption so long as the high levels of the state allows it, said BNP lawmaker. TIB revealed that Thana Police Service was pointed at for corruption by the highest number (97 %) of household (HH) respondents and the Judiciary by the second highest (89 %) number of HHs.

The Daily Bhorer Kagoj (November 29, 2000): Politicians Blamed for Corruption - Thana Police Service Identified as Most Corrupt Service: BNP lawmaker MK Anwar MP blamed politicians for nurturing corruption at the high levels of government, saying it increased rapidly at present. He mentioned this while he was talking at a discussion on "The Impact of Structural Adjustment Policies (SAP) on Corruption" organized by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). TIB Executive Director Manzoor Hasan presided over the meeting whlie Prof Muzaffer Ahmad of Dhaka University presented the keynote paper. The former bureaucrat-turned-politician Mr. Anwar said, nobody would be able to stop corruption so long as the high level of the state allows it. He added, we have to wait for a revolution.
