Transparency and Accountability in Water Resources Sector to Ensure People's Rights Urged


The valuable water resources in Bangladesh are at great stake only due to mismanagement in this sector. It is very much essential to establish transparency and accountability in the management of water resources to ensure people's rights. TIB hails govt. for passing RTI bill

TIB hailed the Government for passing the bill on the Right to Information (RTI) in the Jatiya Sangsad (national parliament) . Terming the passage of the bill a timely decision reflecting the popular demand, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said this law is a must for curbing corruption. Through enacting the law the government has fulfilled one of its election manifestos for ensuring good governance.

In a statement, he also demanded that the Government make the Anti-Corruption Commission independent and stronger, uphold the independence of the judiciary, ensure honesty and neutrality of the administration and strengthen the local government to establish good governance.

Dr. Zaman hoped that the Government would form an independent and strong information commission and play a proactive role in implementing the law. To benefit the citizens from this law everyone including the media will play active role, he further expected.

TIB is also ready to contribute to any steps necessary for the implementation of the new law, Dr. Zaman added.

TIB study on the campaign of the 9th Parliamentary Election released

Candidates of the 9th Parliamentary Election spent on an average over Tk 4.4 million, flouting the expenditure limit of Tk 1.3 million for each candidate set by the Election Commission (EC), revealed a TIB study. The report of the series survey conducted on the campaign process of the 9 th Parliamentary Election was released at a press conference in Dhaka on 6 April 2009 . The first report of this survey showed the analysis of visible and measurable expenses made by the candidates nominated in 40 constituencies until 11 December 2008 , the last day for withdrawal of nomination. EC to hire accountants to audit poll expenses

A day after the release of TIB's report on poll expenses made by the candidates in the 9th Parliamentary Election, the Election Commission (EC) decided to appoint chartered accountants to audit the return statements of election expenditures submitted by the candidates as well as the parties.

The EC would thoroughly scrutinize the returns on poll expenditures to find out any irregularities and warned that "legal action" would be taken against the candidates who did not submit the statements to the Commission. The EC also said that if anybody is found guilty of submitting false statement, he or she would be made disqualified for staying in his/her (MP) status as per strict provision of the Representation of the People Order.


Four bilateral donors sign MOU with TIB

Four leading bilateral development organizations – DFID of the UK , SIDA of Sweden, SDC of Switzerland and the Danish Embassy today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) to support TIB's new initiative titled Paribartan – Driving Change . TIB joined CAMPE organized 'GAW 2009'

Along with a number of GOs and NGOs, working in the Education sector, TIB has participated in the CAMPE organized 'Global Action Week (GAW) 2009' on 22-25 April. This year Global Campaign for Education (GCE) took different programmes to observe GAW from 20 – 26 April. The main theme of this year's GAW was ‘'Youth and Adult Literacy and Lifelong Learning''. Anti- corruption cultural program and solidarity gathering organized
TIB Report on Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Released
An Anti-corruption cultural program and solidarity gathering was organized by TIB at the Rabindra Sarobar Mukta Mancha in the capital on 23 March 2009 on the occasion of International Women's Day 2009. With the slogan “Wake up people… stand up for women's rights…” the cultural program was joined by people from all strata. In particular, renowned singers of the country, eminent women personalities such as freedom fighters, former advisors to the Caretaker Government, writer, and cultural activists attended and expressed their solidarity with this initiative. The role of all stakeholders including the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is under question. The trade unions of the transport sector and bus and truck terminals are beyond the control of BRTA. These were revealed in a study of TIB.
