9th International Anti-Corruption Conferenceto be held in Durban, South Africa, 10-15 October, 1999Recognised as the leading global forum for the discussion of anti-corruption strategies, the 9th IACC will draw together those responsible for containing corruption in their own societies and those with a stake in the success of their efforts both nationally and internationally. A broad range of issues relating to corruption, approached from various perspectives, will be covered in order to promote stronger cross-fertilisation between different professional practitioners in the field of corruption prevention. Through working groups, and small specialised sessions, the conference will offer participants the opportunity to network, to gain valuable exposure to new developments and specialist experience, and to exchange practical ideas and information. This year’s conference has the strong backing of such international figures as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and World Bank President James Wolfensohn. South Africa’s former President Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki are expected to address the Conference and lend their weight to anti-corruption efforts. In addition, both President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and Vice President of Bolivia Jose Quiroga Ramirez have agreed to participate and discuss their own governments’ anti- corruption programmes. Former President of Tanzania Julius Nyerere will also be present to speak on corruption and the north-south dilemma. In addition to the participation of these national leaders, the 1999 conference will be the setting for key discussions on international anti-corruption initiatives and the work of leading multilateral organisations. Participation is expected, for example, newly appointed UNDP Administrator Mark Malloch-Brown, OECD Secretary General Donald Johnston and Interpol Secretary General Raymond Kendall, to name just a few. Leading representatives of civil society and the private sector, including ICC Secretary General Maria Cattaui, will also address the Conference on national and international initiatives.
